Katherine (Katie) Vanderheiden, LPC

I'm Katie, a Licensed Professional Counselor practicing in Wisconsin. I work with adults of all ages, with a focus on trauma, anxiety, depression, women's issues, and the challenges that come with life transitions.

My Approach

I believe clients are the experts in their own lives. Sometimes we just need extra guidance or clarity to understand what's happening and why. My role isn't to tell you what to do. It's to walk alongside you as you explore, heal, and move toward the person you want to become.

My style is person-centered, feminist, and eclectic, which means I draw from a range of approaches depending on what fits you best. That includes CBT, DBT, ACT, and Brainspotting. Much of my work centers on recognizing the patterns that keep showing up in our lives and finding ways to break them for good.

What to Expect

I hope clients feel welcome and supported in our sessions. I want you to learn about yourself, find some ease, and maybe even laugh along the way. Clients tend to describe me as friendly, personable, thoughtful, and educational (and hopefully a little humorous too).

In our first few sessions, I want you to take the time to get to know me as much as I'm getting to know you. If your therapist doesn't feel like a good fit, therapy will be harder, and I want to be the right fit for you. From there, we'll figure out what matters most to you and build a roadmap to help get you there. Therapy is your journey, and your priorities guide the work.

I took a long route to becoming a therapist. I always knew I'd end up here, but I wasn't ready yet. I spent years working in the community with people from all walks of life, much of it resolving crises as they happened. Over time, I noticed the same patterns kept bringing those crises back. To paraphrase Desmond Tutu, I realized I needed to stop people from falling into the river instead of pulling them out further downstream. That's when I knew it was time to become a therapist and help people stop repeating the patterns that hurt them.

Before joining A Healing Place, I had the privilege of working at a tribal agency. That experience taught me so much about historical and generational trauma, and about how breaking those patterns can make life healthier for both the individual and their family.

A Final Word

Therapy isn't easy, and I want to honor how hard it is. It's an amazing privilege to hear someone's story, hold their pain, walk alongside them for a while, and watch them grow. Thank you for your trust.
